Executive Functions

A simple way to understand executive functions is that they are the mental abilities required to successfully engage in goal directed behavior. Broadly speaking, these are the self-regulation skills that help move us toward who and what is important. These skills include:

  • Attention control
  • Self-monitoring of actions and behaviors
  • Organizing, planning, prioritizing tasks and task completion
  • Ability to hold information in the memory and act upon it when appropriate
  • Emotion regulation
  • Effort management
